    For All Those...

Anger and grief about war drove me to draw, stain, soak edges of wood in paint, pound the canvas, lean into the brush with the full weight of my body, and more.
    This piece is about America.

ABOUT THE SHOW - comments taken from title page on http://www.altares.net
"An Art Exhibition based on the 'Day of the Dead' traditional aspects of honoring and remembrance of loved ones tossed in with political thought, humor and social trends; transformed into art work for the community to enjoy, celebrate and reflect."

I look forward to many happy hours blogging-around with creative souls. Thank you dear art-woman, for setting up this venue. I woke up thinking about my "Mug Shot"! She will be my muse in designing my new studio space. We shall see how she guides this adventure. Best of luck with the Altar Exhibition - your piece is brilliant 'viktorya'.

    yours truly,

I think this will be kind of a cool place for us to meet up with other like-minded folks who are interested in art, books, and all this that makes life good. The Alan Ginsberg Photography exhibit starts this coming Saturday at the Crocker Museum here in Sac. There is a documentary I ordered thru Netflix called The Source about the Beat Generation Poets and Artists. Hope it gets here today so I can watch it before I see the exhibition. Have a great day!!! Oooh, ooooh, we just received The Source.... documentary thru Netflix. We will watch it soon.
    The 'beat' goes on!
By the way - Shawn Colvin's new CD release, "These Four Walls" is fab.

The painting is a very moving one. It contains emotions that all can relate to. I love it. Bravo! I look forward to many conversations on this site.
Thanks Leslie for the news about Shawn Colvin. It has been a while since we heard from her. Can't wait to check it out. I have also heard that the Source is very good, hope you will share what you thought of it.

I must humbly admit one of the things that drew me to Shawn Colvin's new CD was the artwork on the cover. It is a painting (reminding me of Victoria's brilliant artwork, then my heart skipped a beat). The cover art Colvin's CD is a body-less dress, similar to my ceramic pieces I've been slupting over the past two years. And prior to that, the cloth garb pieces I designed for over 45 years. I fell in love with the CD before I even heard her words!

I am learning (oh so slowly) that the 'dress' form image is powerfully symbolic for me. Much like 'faces' or 'houses' would be to some artists.

Does anyone feel they have a symbolic image that keeps reoccurring in their artwork/lives?

And I wanted to share some info about an on on-line newsletter I receive twice weekly. It is totally free and full of art and life thoughts. Very professionally thought out and presented, almost like an 'art lecture'. I'm usually very impatient with this type of newsletter, but I seem to glup up his every comment and learn so much from each and every letter. There is also a web-site with 'click-backs' to see how people respond to these thought provoking newsletters, with not only words, but the individual artwork! You can subscribe and/or just check out Robert Genn's site at -http://www.painterskeys.com/. This week one of the letters is entitled "Embrace Resistance."
    cheers

A small group of artists gathered last night during a private opening of the Altar Show at the Asylum Gallery in Sacramento. Close guess about 40 people attended the celebration, aligned with the "Day of the Dead."

Awards were given to deserving people who continue to support the show now in its 13th year. Jeff Armstrong, Yvonne Bryte, Dwight Head - congratulations also to Julia Stagg and Linda Katzdorn, organizers of the show.

About the entertainment -- In the small Gallery space two young women astounded all of us with their rhythmic African dance movements, in step with the beat of African drumming and chanting. The small space pulsated with the energy from Angela James' dance and drumming group. Some of us Boomers (women 60 years old and younger) agreed that our brains would be on the floor if we threw our heads back and forth like these young dancers did (and they didn't even break a sweat)! Thank you Angela - your storytelling enchanted us too!

Art, Wine, Food, Dance, Jazz brought a bunch of folks together to celebrate loved ones who have traveled onto another place. Walls in the Asylum Gallery are covered with Altars celebrating the dead, made by those of us left behind dealing with their deaths in the context of "the continuity of life."

The public opening of the show is today at noon.

I am enjoying Robert Genn's site and letters very much.
The letter that you are refering to "Embrace Resistance" was one that has meant so much to me. My figure drawing teacher is always saying if a student is struggling then he knows that student is working hard and learning. Glenn says that artists need to realize that its the pushing that makes it all worth while and that there is always a wall of capability - somedays one is working in a room the size or a large board room and other days a small elevator. I can relate to this feeling so much, it can be so frustrating. It helps to read about the struggles of other that are simular to yours, somehow it helps to keep me continuing on.
