Music, Art Newsletter Info
From Leslie -
I must humbly admit one of the things that drew me to Shawn Colvin's new CD was the artwork on the cover. It is a painting (reminding me of Victoria's brilliant artwork, then my heart skipped a beat). The cover art Colvin's CD is a body-less dress, similar to my ceramic pieces I've been slupting over the past two years. And prior to that, the cloth garb pieces I designed for over 45 years. I fell in love with the CD before I even heard her words!
I am learning (oh so slowly) that the 'dress' form image is powerfully symbolic for me. Much like 'faces' or 'houses' would be to some artists.
Does anyone feel they have a symbolic image that keeps reoccurring in their artwork/lives?
And I wanted to share some info about an on on-line newsletter I receive twice weekly. It is totally free and full of art and life thoughts. Very professionally thought out and presented, almost like an 'art lecture'. I'm usually very impatient with this type of newsletter, but I seem to glup up his every comment and learn so much from each and every letter. There is also a web-site with 'click-backs' to see how people respond to these thought provoking newsletters, with not only words, but the individual artwork! You can subscribe and/or just check out Robert Genn's site at -http://www.painterskeys.com/. This week one of the letters is entitled "Embrace Resistance."
cheers

Leslie, I so appreciate your question about symbolic imagery! Your work resonates power, so much so that often when I've been in your studio, I fall silent, hearing and feeling the messages you bring to this world. I feel blessed to have been included in your many conferences because your work really is "Beyond The Surface." (editors note: Leslie owned that conference producing some of the most astounding combinations of artists, workshops and I guess one of my favorites was the Goddess Ball.)
Back to your question - what seems to surface in my work are Faces and Grids. The "mug shot" on the header of this blog has both - the background grid and coffee cup face. I'm drawn to the forms or the forms are drawn to me - don't know how or why it happens but when I'm listening with my brush, there they are.
The newsletter sounds fantastic and I will check it out along with Shawn Colvin's CD.

If you are reading Robert Genn's on-line newsletter, (info in an earlier 'comment'), there is always a 'click-back' link at the end of each letter. There you you can read and see the responses to his thought provoking letters, which include actual artwork by the artists responding. Most often in the form of paintings. Excellent way to start a day, with a cup or mug of java in hand of course! Cheers - Leslie
