Art in the Library: Napa City-County Library

Art in the Library: Napa City-County Library
Deadline: February 1, 2007

Napa City-County Library (NCCL) invites artists to apply to have their artwork displayed at the downtown Napa Main Library in the renowned Napa Valley. Artwork is a key visual element as people enter the library and should enhance the atmosphere of the library.  Works that are generally appealing, dynamic and colorful are good candidates for the competition.  The audience for exhibition is the general community served by NCCL. Approximately 1,000 people visit the library daily, from all walks of life. Approximately one-third of the visitors are children aged 14 and under. The Art in the Library Committee meets once per year, usually in the Spring, to review submitted artwork.  The Committee is comprised of area artists and the Assistant Library Director.

Exhibition Guidelines
The artwork will be on loan to the Napa City-County Library with no compensation as well as no fee to the artist.  The artwork will be exhibited for a notified period, usually one month or a bit longer at times, and should be available to the library for a two-month period.  The name of the winning artists and titles of the artworks will be posted, and a press release sent to wide ranging media outlets. Competition is encouraged for artists both inside and outside Napa Valley.
No Commerce: Obviously, no prices or cost list would be displayed at the public library.  No sales can be made at the library, and prices may not be posted on works.  The artist may, and should, provide promotional materials for distribution to library customers interested in additional information about the artist, including contact information.
Ready-to hang: Artwork must be received ready to hang on designated wall space.  The interior walls of the library are concrete and cannot be altered to accommodate artwork.  Most framed, or unframed, canvases, photographs, and paintings hang easily with wire.
Installation and removal: Artwork shall be delivered to and removed from the library at a date and time agreed upon by the artist and the “Art in the Library” Organizer or the Assistant Library Director.  Artwork shall be delivered to and removed from the library at the artist’s expense.  It is understood that any shipping or handling costs for delivery and/or return of artwork are at the artist’s expense.  It is understood that control over the exhibition, its publicity, placement of and duration rests entirely with the Library and may involve photographs of the exhibit.
MOST IMPORTANT:  If an artist’s work is selected and awarded approximately a month of exhibit time, the artist must certify that s/he will install the work at the appointed time, regardless of other events that may develop.  Thus, the artist commits to and pledges to adhere to the agreed-upon time period.  If an artist cannot make this commitment, s/he may not participate in the competition.  It is acceptable for an artist to request a particular time period, e.g., the spring months, summer months, etc., which will be taken into consideration in the scheduling process.

How to Apply
1.  Artists are invited to submit at least five but not more than ten examples of the kind and style of work they intend to exhibit.  Examples must be submitted in the form of either 35 mm slides that will be shown with a slide projector for the jury’s review or a CD of digital images.  The exact size of the work should be noted on a paper list of items captured on the slides and must accompany the submission.  For example, if there are 8 slides, there must be an accompanying list of 8 titles.  If an artist is invited to exhibit, s/he must bring work from the examples submitted or very comparable work.  The library reserves the right to decline to show work that is substantially different from the original images.
2.  Submit a cover letter including brief biographical information, a list of recent exhibitions or shows, and other interesting information about the artist or artwork submitted that will be suitable in a press release or as a press release. Each artist will be featured in a press release for that month.
3.  Application materials will be kept on file at the library until reviewed by the selection committee.  Artists should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if they wish application materials to be returned.
4.  Send application materials to:
