Sketchy quilt
I quickly sketched the following abstract landscape painting. It's tiny (5" x 7" acrylic on paper), and it was shoved in a folder for years. Then one day while looking for another sketch, I spotted it, pulled it out, and liked it.

As things go, and about that time, I had been in Walmart where they were closing out their fabric department and came across some rolls of fabric strips that were in this same color-way. They attracted me because some of my large paintings are as well that same palette.
This painting on canvas, Grid 3, is large - 57" x 42", and you can see the relationship of color.

Ideas for work often collide with each other and this was one of those times, hence, the beginning of me translating the tiny 5" x 7" abstract landscape into a fiber artwork - a quilt wallhanging. To follow are a series of photos showing that process - you will see how the fabrics were spot-on to the color-ways in the tiny sketch.
Fabrics are laid out to see how they form a similar rendition of the painted sketch.

Started cutting and sewing strips together.

Getting closer...

The piece below is sewn together and hanging on the wall, about 36" x 24", and there are new slices of fabric that I've pinned on to add more dimension - those have to be sewn on soon so I can finish the quilt. I think I may use chiffon as the backing so that it doesn't become rigid from the quilting process itself.

More to follow.
